Why Use a Tongue Cleaner/Scraper?
Everyone knows how important brushing and flossing teeth are for maintaining good oral health. But did you know you can significantly improve your oral hygiene by giving your tongue a good cleaning every once in a while? Even dentists recommend brushing your tongue with a toothbrush, but there’s a much better tool designed specifically for the job.
If your tongue has a white or yellow coating on it, or if you experience bad breath, then you definitely could benefit from using a tongue cleaner. The surface of our tongue is deeply textured and can accumulate particulate matter that’s not easily rinsed away, such as food particles, plaque, and an overgrowth of fungus and bacteria which can cause bad breath. The best and most effective way to remove this buildup is by using a tongue cleaner to scrape away the excessive coating on the tongue.
What Exactly is a Tongue Cleaner?
A tongue cleaner is a simple device, usually made of plastic or metal, designed to safely and effectively remove any plaque and debris from the surface of your tongue and prevent bad breath. The tongue cleaner we offer is made of pure copper, which has been clinically proven to be anti-bacterial by nature. It not only kills off the “bad” bacteria of the mouth, but it also allows the healthy “good” bacteria to flourish. According to Ayurveda, a copper tongue scraper is beneficial for all body-types due to its powerful anti-microbial properties. The tongue cleaner is designed to gently and easily remove buildup from the entire length of the tongue.
Benefits of Tongue Scraping
Tongue scraping is a practice that involves using a tool to gently remove debris and bacteria from the surface of the tongue. It leaves the mouth feeling cleaner and fresher than with just brushing and flossing alone, and is best performed after brushing and flossing. Many people include tongue scraping as part of their oral hygiene routine due to its benefits for oral health. Some of the benefits include:
- Reducing Bacteria: The tongue can harbor bacteria, food particles, and dead cells, contributing to bad breath and the growth of harmful bacteria in the mouth. Tongue scraping helps to remove these elements, promoting a cleaner oral environment.
- Improving Breath: Since bacteria on the tongue can be a source of bad breath, removing this debris through tongue scraping may contribute to fresher breath.
- Enhancing Taste: By removing the buildup on the tongue’s surface, some individuals report an improvement in taste perception.
- Preventing Plaque Formation: While toothbrushing primarily targets teeth, tongue scraping can help prevent the accumulation of plaque on the tongue, supporting overall oral health.
Directions for Use
Initially, it’s a good idea to clean the tongue on a daily basis. When first using a tongue cleaner, you may notice a white, yellow or brown exudate that comes off the tongue as you scrape it. This is normal and a sign that you’re removing old debris, which is a good thing! Eventually, once the majority of the plaque and bacteria are removed from your tongue, usually within 2-3 weeks, you will notice that nothing comes off the tongue except clear fluid. This is when you can drop down to a maintenance regimen of once or twice a week.
Step One: Extend your tongue out of your mouth as far as you comfortably can. Place the tongue cleaner as far back on your tongue as you can without triggering the gag reflex. This will get easier over time.
Step Two: Gently press the scraper against your tongue. With gentle pressure, scrape the tongue cleaner forward towards the front of your mouth. Try to cover the entire surface of your tongue with each scrape. Be gentle when scraping your tongue to avoid causing irritation or injury.
Step Three: After each scrape, rinse the tongue scraper under running water to remove the accumulated debris. Repeat the process as necessary. Continue scraping your tongue, starting from the back and moving towards the front, until you’ve covered the entire surface. You may need to repeat the process a few times.
Step Four: After tongue cleaning, rinse your mouth thoroughly with water to remove any remaining debris. Rinse the scraper tool and remove and debris that may be stuck to it.
