Ideally, we should get all the nutrition that our bodies need from the foods that we eat. But in this day and age, sometimes that is nearly impossible to achieve. There are a handful of nutrients that are so vital to good health, we must supplement on a regular basis in order to be fully healthy. Just like with organic sulfur and vitamin K2 (more on this coming soon), Iodine is at the top of that list. The benefits of Iodine supplementation are so broad, and the prevalence of Iodine deficiency is so widespread, that it’s safe to say the vast majority of the population will benefit from supplementing with Iodine.

How do you know if you are Iodine deficient and need to supplement?
GET TESTED! There is no way to know for sure unless you get tested. Do an internet search for labs or doctors in your area that that test for Iodine. Read the book The Iodine Crisis by Lynne Farrow for essential information about Iodine and your health.

What are some of the benefits of Iodine that I’ve noticed personally? Since I began supplementing with Lugol’s Iodine last summer, after testing extremely low for Iodine, I’ve noticed several positive effects that I’m thrilled to report. First of all, the dry, cracking skin that I’m accustomed to having during dry winter months, has become non-existent this past winter. Even though I continue to heat my home with only wood, which is a very dry heat, my skin has not been the slightest bit dry this winter. It did not crack open once or even come close. It seemed to take a few months for my chronic dry skin to change for the better, but that happened just in time for the winter months, which is proof to me that iodine has made a huge improvement in my skin. In addition, I’m loosing much less hair when I take a shower, and I experience much less brain fog than I did before. Lastly, it also seems that my immune system is now stronger than ever.

I lost my thyroid due to graves desease. How do I take iodine or even know it is safe for me?
Hi Linda,
Although it’s likely that you developed Graves’ Disease from a lack of iodine, we strongly recommend that you consult with a healthcare professional who is knowledgeable in iodine supplementation before taking iodine. (see this article: http://www.naturalendocrinesolutions.com/archives/can-an-iodine-deficiency-cause-graves-disease-hashimotos-thyroiditis) In fact, anyone dealing with Graves’ or Hashimoto’s Disease must consult with their doctor before beginning iodine supplementation. And if they do supplement with iodine, it must be done under a doctor’s supervision.
Be well,
Jonathan
I have been reading that we should not take oral iodine, but use pure iodine topically and that it will be absorbed. Thoughts?
Hi Susan,
I highly recommend that you read the book, The Iodine Crises by Lynn Farrow. You can find it here: https://mountainwellbeing.com/shop/iodine-book-the-iodine-crisis-by-lynne-farrow/ There is a TON of misinformation about iodine, and the majority of doctors are completely uninformed. Dr. David Brownstein calls it “the most misunderstood nutrient.” He also has a great book called, Iodine: Why You Need It, Why You Can’t Live Without It. Either way, please educate yourself about this very important nutrient.
It is unlikely that you will get sufficient iodine from only topical absorption. Some people use it topically to judge whether their bodies need iodine or not, but this is not a very accurate way to test. It’s better to get tested via blood, urine and/or saliva. Find an “iodine literate practitioner” in your area to help you, but first read the book! Lynn’s book is, in my opinion, one of the absolute most important books on health you will ever read. It also contains lots of great information on women’s health.
Be well,
Jonathan
Thank you so much for responding. I had read Dr. Brownstein’s book several years ago and was won over. I had been taking an iodine called “iodi forte” mixed by our local compounding pharmacist, which had all three recomended components. Then just hadn’t been continuing for several unrelated reasons. I had recently wanted to start up again when I read the articles I mentioned above. I have just received your Lugals in the mail, and am anxious to start supplementing again.
